Welcome to the Hout Bay and Llandudno community.

We hope you will have a fantastic holiday with us, whether you enjoy the amazing views, boat trips, hikes, beach activities or just sampling our local cuisine and the best of the Cape vineyards.

Unfortunately, during holiday season there is an increase in the number of opportunistic, petty criminals in the area. Holiday makers often tend not to be as security-conscious as they should be.

We want you to have a safe and hassle free holiday, so please bear the following in mind.

DO NOT:

Conspicuously look like as a tourist by wandering around wearing high value cameras, jewellery and expensive brand-name back packs and bags.
Swim in the river or in the ocean near the river mouth. Due to drought causing low water flow, the water contains high levels of toxic bacteria which will cause gastroenteritis.
Wander in the bush areas on the back of the dunes.
Hike KARBONKELBERG or go below the SENTINEL mountain.
Hike ROCKET ROAD and SANDY BAY unless you go in groups of four or more.
Enter less privileged areas unless you are part of a formal tour group.
Leave valuables in sight on car seats in unattended cars.

DO:

Keep passport and credit cards in a separate pocket or body belt.
Leave only unimportant cards with two or three hundred Rand in the wallet.
Tell your host (or someone similar) where you are going and when you expect to be back.
Give them your phone number. If you do not return in time, they can call you. If you don't answer the call, they will understand that there may be a problem and can take steps.
If confronted: stay calm, avoid escalating the situation, and comply with demands.
Keep your bags close and your valuables in your pockets.
When putting your bag aside in public places and restaurants link the bag strap around your chair or table leg or even around your own leg so it can’t be slid away from you by someone standing or passing nearby.
Be wary of persons edging closer when you are about to draw your wallet to pay for items. Snatch and run happens quickly in the harbour crowds.
Be extra alert when using ATM’s. Shield the keypad with your hand so that no one can see the pin you are putting in and do not allow anyone to distract you from what you are doing. They may swop your card with a dud card.

Looking after our Guests

Hosts need to be honest with their guests without alarming them. Overseas tourists are generally aware of local conditions, whichever country they are visiting, and they as well us up-country visitors need to be vigilant and know they should take certain safety precautions. However, reminders or advice specific to Hout Bay and Llandudno will assist in making their stay here all the more pleasant – and safe.

Tips for hosts

Please advise your guests that:

Watchcon’s number 021 790 9333 should be the first port of call in case of a criminal incident. Watchcon has the contact details of a large number of foreign language speakers, including diverse languages such as Welsh and Croatian, who can assist guests who have fallen foul of criminal activity.
They should not carry handbags and expensive equipment on the beach.
They should avoid leaving anything lying around in their cars.
It’s preferable to take a reputable and official taxi back to their accommodation at night, rather than walking.
They should avoid drawing cash from ATMs after dark or after hours.

Ensuring our guests’ safety is a high priority. Any incidents involving up-country or overseas visitors to our valley could severely impact on tourism, which is one of Hout Bay’s major sources of income. HBNW's annual Beach Safety Project operates from mid-December to mid-January and has proved to be very successful in keeping our visitors safe.
