A UPS and a generator have been installed which will keep running in the case of a power interruption.
Each of the high sites has a UPS installed.
In the case of stage 4, there will be insufficient time to charge the batteries. May need to consider lithium batteries in parallel to the UPS system.
Fibre Network
Fibre Network
Openserve Fibre Network will stay up during severe load shedding conditions / lengthy power outages. No power needed except at main Hout Bay hub which has a battery back-up plus a generator set.
DFA Fibre Network has backup systems and takes about 16 hours to charge from nil to full.
Battery backups generally can last several days without recharge, but if phase 4 load shedding extends beyond 1 week, fibre (and cell network) outages can be expected, given insufficient recharge time between load shedding.
Note that DSL needs power for cooling fans in distribution boxes, but not fibre.

Vodacom has their towers in Llandudno and these fall over within minutes of a power outage.
MTN copes with phase 1, 2 & 3 but not phase 4.

Install UPS for CCTV cameras in the area.
Check fire systems and fire control systems regularly – power cuts can affect fire systems.
Use a HBNW radio to communicate when telephone lines are down.

Check and recharge the batteries on your alarm system frequently.
Test security systems to ensure battery back-up systems are working during load shedding periods.
Use battery-powered LED lights for improved visibility outdoors if load shedding happens at night.
Use a HBNW radio to communicate when telephone lines are down.
Consider having handy spare batteries for phones, radios, etc.
Proactively cancel any potential false alarms with SSP’s caused by load shedding so that their call centre agents can correctly prioritise calls that need urgent attention.
