A resident reported that they received a phone call by their domestic worker's "brother" in tears informing them that she had been killed in a car accident. They needed money urgently for transport, etc. After a few calls they were able to establish that she was unharmed. This scam was reported to SAPS who confirmed it is a new angle. The resident has asked that we spread the word.
In addition, the tree cutting scammer who is still doing the rounds in various areas again. There is a scam artist who is regularly reported in different areas in Hout Bay. He pretends to be a neighbours' gardener, cutting trees or hedges, and wants to check if the branches may have fallen into your property, or he wants to borrow an electrical cable for his cutter or else he uses another plausible story to get onto your property. Once he gains entry to your property he steals whatever he can lay his hands on. He is usually neatly dressed and well-spoken and sometimes carries a clipboard. He is often seen leaving in a nearby white car. Please spread the word as too many people are still falling for this scam.
